- The British Geological Survey (BGS) is a component body of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) one of the seven UK research councils that fund and manage scientific research and training in the UK. The NERC is the research council that does Earth system science. Its main aim is to understand the behaviour of the complete biological, physical, and chemical interactions between the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, biosphere, and cryosphere.
