BASIC DATES IN A.I.MALTSEV'S LIFE AND WORK*
 

MALTSEV Anatoly Ivanovich (1909-1967), the Russian mathematician, the founder of logic-and-algebraic scientific school in Novosibirsk, academician of AS USSR (1958). The basic works in algebra (group and ring theory, topological algebra), in mathematical logic (theory of algorithms) and the applications of its methods to algebra. He is the winner of the Lenin prize (1964) and of the State premium of the USSR (1946).

 1909          Anatoly Ivanovich Maltsev was born 
               on November, 27th in the Mishyeronskii settlement
               (nowadays Shatursky district of the Moscow region)
               in the family of Ivan Aleksandrovich Maltsev, 
               hereditary worker-glass blower. 

 1910          Moving of Maltsev's family to Borzhomi because of
               the position that was offered to Ivan
               Aleksandrovich, the glass-maker in the glass
               factory.

 1912	       Moving of Maltsev's family to the glass-works of a 
               resort of the city of Mineralnyye Vody.

 1914-1916     Musical talents are revealed. Ivan Alyeksandrovich
               sells the cow and buys a violin to the son.
               He takes the lessons in the city for playing
               on a violin. Later on, he continues musical
               practice: until his 30 years plays on a violin, 
               then on a grand piano.

 1918-1925     Studying in the factory seven-year school.

 1925-1927     He enters the pedagogical college of Mineralnyye 
               Vody.

 1927-1931     The student of the Mathematical subdivision of the 
               Moscow state university.

 1930-1931     Assistant in the Moscow institute of grain and
               flour technology.

 1931-1932     Assistant in the Ivanovo energy institute.

 1932-1960     Assistant, the senior lecturer, professor, and the 
               Head of the Higher algebra Sub-Faculty in the
               Ivanovo State Pedagogical institute.

 1934-1937     The Post-graduate student of the Moscow state 
               university.

 1937          He has protected the master's thesis "Finite rank 
               Abelian groups without torsion".

 1939-1942     He prepares the Doctor's thesis in the V.A.Steklov 
               Mathematical institute of AS USSR.

 1941          He has protected the thesis for a doctor's degree 
               "Structure of isomorphic-representable infinite 
               algebras and groups".

 1942-1953     the Senior research associate of the V.A.Steklov 
               Mathematical institute of AS USSR.

 1944          Given the rank of the full professor in the sub- 
               faculty "Algebra and Geometry".

 1945          Given an award "the Honour Badge" in association 
               with the 220th anniversary of the Academy of 
               sciences of the USSR. Awarded with a medal "For the
               valorous work ".

 1946          He has granted with the State premium of the second
               degree for the research in the field of Lie group
               theory.

 1947-1955     The Deputy of the Ivanovo Regional Council of 
               the worker deputies.

 1948          Awarded with a medal "In commemoration of the 800th
               anniversary of Moscow ".

 1951-1955     The Deputy of the Supreme Council of the RSFSR.

 1951-1960     Chairman of the Ivanovo regional committee for 
               peace protection.

 1953          Granted an award "the Honour Badge". He is elected 
               the corresponding member of the Academy of Science
               of the USSR.

 1954-1982     The Deputy of the Supreme Council of the USSR.

 1956          For his outstanding merits in the field of science, 
               he is given the rank of the honoured science worker
               of RSFSR.

 1958          He is elected the full member (academician) of the 
               Academy of Science of the USSR.

 1959          He has been approved as the editor-in-chief of 
               "Siberian Mathematical magazine".

 1960-1967     the Head of the department of algebra and 
               mathematical logic in the Institute of mathematics
               of SB AS USSR.

 1961          He is elected the member of Presidium of the 
               Siberian branch of Academy of Science of the USSR.

 1964          He is given the rank of the winner of the Lenin 
               premium for a cycle of works on the applications of
               mathematical logic to algebra and the theory
               of models published in 1954-1963

 1967          Awarded with Lenin order for the participation in 
               creating the Siberian centre of science and for the 
               success achieved in the field of science

                A.I.Maltsev died on July, 7th, 1967.
