A contribution of Alexander Danilovich Aleksandrov to mathematics occurred with a motto «Back to Euclid».
A.D.Aleksandrov's pioneer works enriched geometry with methods of theory of measure and functional analysis. Aleksandrov developed a synthetic way of looking at differential geometry. In particular, he created intrinsic geometry of irregular surfaces. He has developed a visual teaching method of splitting and pasting together. This method has allowed Aleksandrov to solve many extremum problems in the theory of manifolds of bounded curvature. Aleksandrov constructed a theory of metric spaces with one-sided restrictions on curvature.
A natural known class of metric spaces appeared that generalized Riemannian spaces in the sense that the concept of curvature, a pivot one for Riemannian geometry, was interpreted within these spaces. The field came to be known as «Alexandrov geometry». It is being actively developed up to now.
The works of A.D.Aleksandrov were also a point where a theory of mixed volumes of convex bodies gained its development. He has proved fundamental theorems of convex polyhedrons and has proposed a new synthetic method to prove existence theorems.
A.D.Aleksandrov is also the founder of chronogeometry.
A.D.Aleksandrov created new research methods. These methods were found to be effective both in geometry, and in adjacent fields of mathematics.
He wrote a series of monographs, a set of scientific articles, school textbooks, and higher education institutions. Likewise, he wrote also publicistic papers, memories about scientists and philosophical essays on moral values of science. A.D.Aleksandrov created a great school of thought.
The electronic resource that deals with life and work of academician A.D.Aleksandrov consists of a biobibliographic index, tables of contents of monographs and collection issues, references to full texts of certain works of the scientist and publications about him.
The biobibliographic index reflects learned works, editorial works, publicistic papers together with the literature on the scientist. Founders of the resource express their thanks to collaborators of the library of S.L.Sobolev Institute of Mathematics of SB RAS for consultations and materials provided for the biobibliography.
This work used a biobibliographic index «Alexander Danilovich Aleksandrov (1912–1999)» that was prepared and published in the Institute of Mathematics in 2012 (scientific editors: Yu.G.Reshetnyak, S.S.Kutateladze) as well as catalogues, stocks, and electronic resources of SPSL SB RAS and the library of the Institute of Mathematics of SB RAS. The search was drawn also on the basis of abstract magazines, of the Annals of journal papers, the Book annals, the Annals of newspaper articles. The use was made of databases Scopus, Web of Science, Zentralblatt MATH, mathematical portal Math-Net.Ru, electronic catalogues, and databases of large Russian and foreign libraries.
Materials of the index are arranged chronologically in two basic sections: «Index of works of A.D.Alyeksandrov» and «Literature on his life and work».
