Valyentin Afanas'yevich Koptyug (1931-1997) was born in the family of the non-manual worker in the town of Yukhnov, Kaluga region. In 1938 his father was subjected to repression. V.A.Koptyug left high school with the gold medal in Samarkand, where he had got to during evacuation in the war beginning. In 1954 he graduated from Moscow D.I.Myendyelyeyev chemical-and-technological institute, where he was a lecturer and post-graduate student. In 1957 he has defended a thesis of candidate of sciences dissertation.
Since 1959 V.A.Koptyug worked in Novosibirsk institute of organic chemistry, where he has passed the way from the laboratory head up to the director of the Institute. In 1965 he got the scientific degree of Doctor of chemical sciences, in 1968 he was elected the correspondent member of the Academy of sciences of the USSR, and in 1979 he became its full member.
Since 1966 Valyentin Afanas'yevich was the professor, and from 1978 till 1980 the rector of Novosibirsk state university, for many years he headed the department of organic chemistry there. Among his students there are a lot of candidates and doctors of science.
From 1980 till 1997 V.A.Koptyug was vice-president of the Academy of science and the chairman of its Siberian branch.
V.A.Koptyug is the famous scientist in the field of physical, synthetic and applied organic chemistry. He has made much to apply the newest physical and mathematical methods for solving chemical problems. He has 380 scientific works, including 4 monographs, 30 certificates of authorship, 5 foreign patents.
His scientific works are honoured with Lenin prize (1990), A.P.Karpinskii International premium (1985). He was the foreign member of academies of sciences of Belarus, Bulgaria, India, Mongolia, and Czechoslovakia. V.A.Koptyug was elected the vice-president (1985-1987) and president (1987-1989) of International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, vice-president of the Scientific Committee on the Problems of the Environment of the International Council of Scientific Unions (1992-1997). He performed the extensive scientific and educational work on the problems of the environment protection and sustainable development. He was the sole Russian member in the Top Level Advisory Council on Sustainable Development at the UN General secretary (1993-1995), he took part in the development of the national strategy of sustainable development of Russia. Since 1994 he headed the United Scientific Council of RAS on ecological problems. He has organized the publication of the international magazine " Chemistry for Sustainable Development " in Novosibirsk. He was the developer and coordinator of " Chemistry and the Environment " international program.
He was elected the deputy of the USSR Supreme Council (1984-1989), the delegate of XXVI and XXVII Congresses of CPSU, the member of the Central Inspection Commission of CPSU in 1981-1986, the member-candidate of the CPSU Central Committee in 1986-1990, the member of Presidium of CPRF CEC in 1993-1997.
For his scientific, pedagogical, and public activity V.A.Koptyug has been given the rank of Socialist Labour Hero (1986), he has been awarded by two Lenin orders, Labour Red Banner order, and Honour Badge award. In 1996 he has become the honourable citizen of Novosibirsk.
An avenue in Novosibirsk Akademgorodok and research vessel at Baikal lake are named by V.A.Koptyug. The mayoralty of Novosibirsk has founded V.A.Koptyug student's grant, SB RAS - premium for the young scientists. In 1999 the national academy of sciences of Belarus and Siberian Branch of RAS founded V.A.Koptyug premium for the best joint scientific work.
