1997

On May 27, All-Russia Libraries Day was celebrated
On first days of May, Sector of Information Systems was founded in the Branch, and since May, 27,experimental server of the Branch began to function.
In May, Potaninskaya Library was opened for readers. For details, see Interview with Lika.
In the beginning of July, InfoPilot, i.e. Guide to the Web resources, began to function at the Web-site.
On September, 9, representatives of NBBI Project Bureau for Information Management (Netherlands), dealing with production and distribution of information, visited the Branch. The possibilities of cooperation were discussed.
September, 12 - a solemn date:
the 20th anniversary of Patent reading room. Celebration of the date was held during the Christmas Meeting of patent specialists on December, 23..
On October, 1, the Branch of SPSL SB RAS returned to its winter schedule:
from 9.00 till 19.00, at Saturday - from 10.00 till 18.00, Sunday - rest day.
On October, 17, presentation of the Web-server of the Branch of SPSL SB RAS with the demonstration of available resources was held. 25 librarians from the institutes of SB RAS, Institute of blood circulation pathology and Novosibirsk State University were aquainted with the information future of the library.
On October, 23, the new page of electronic Exhibition of Recent Acquisitions
(from the funds of SPSL and the Branch) appeared at the server. It weekly informed the users about the books, received as deposit copies.
At the end of October, an access to the complex of bibliographic Data Bases "FirstSearch", produced by the world greatest library system OCLC was received.. Unfortunately, it finished in the beginning of December, due to experimental character of access regime.
In autumn, an access to the full-text data base of Springer journals was organized.. Users could have a free look through Contents and Referencies of 220 journals, published in 1996-1997, while the full text of an article costed 600 roubles per page. Till December, 31, the deliveries of copies of articles from the library funds of Germany ( Bavarian State Library), France, Great Britain and Netherlandes were parallelly functioning.
On October, 31, 1997, in the main building of SPSL SB RAS (Voskhod str., 15, of.507) the Round Table, devoted to the "Problems of settling of the market of business information in Novosibirsk", was held. Program of the Meeting.
At the beginning of November, "The Autumn Album " - an experiment in Internet excursions along Akademgorodok - was placed at the Web-server of the Branch.
During the Decade of Elderly People book exhibition "Pension Security in Russia" was held. At the exhibition, information about new State Pension Law, the alternative pension systems, pension security in foreign countries was available. Besides that, consultative materials on the pensions calculation from magazines and newspapers were presented.
On December, 1-17, the exhibition ""Museum Work in Siberia: State and Problems"", timed with the scientific and practical conference, held by the Institute of History was demonstrated. Afterwards, about a hundred of books and journals moved to the Museum of History of SB RAS (Zolotodolinskaya str., 77, tel.35-05-89) and stayed there on December, 18-19.
Throughout December, you could see in the reading room of the Branch editions, presented to our library by Presidium of SB RAS, regional administration, academician Yu.I.Shokin, newspaper" Nauka v Sibiri". The gift included about 70 items of foreign books, journals, newspapers.
On December, 23, in the Patent reading room the Christmas Meeting of patent specialists, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Patent Fund of the Branch of SPSL SB RAS, took place. The program of the meeting, along with unofficial, contained a moderate official part.
We were noticed! In the review of kiber-space of Novosibirsk ("Molodost Sibiri", 34(51), December,20, 1997) Alexandr Laryanovskij had found the following words for the site of the Branch of SPSL SB RAS:
"A splendid search and information system was realized by the Branch of SPSL SB RAS. Besides various catalogues and data bases, the is Pilot at your service... The selected addresses (about 3500) are united into following divisions: Internet, Search, Guides and Encyclopedia, Publishing Houses, Science and Technique, Library, Planet and Russia. Plus search options. It is, evidently, a serious and tedious work. I can only guess, why this resource almost was not announced". We are grateful to the author of "Yellow Pages of Virtual Novosibirsk" for this announcement.

1998

Into the New Year - the Year of Tiger -
with liric mood

In January, Maryasova Olga Nikolayevna, consultant of the Sector of Patent Documents of the Branch of SPSL SB RAS, was receiving congratulations with successful pass of the examinations for patent attorney of the Russian Federation.

In January, the receipt of article copies from foreign journals of Bavarian State Library was resumed.

From January,5 till the beginning of February in the Patent reading room of the Branch of SPSL SB RAS (Lavrentyev ave., 6) the exhibition New Books in Inventions and Patent Work was held, demonstrating about 100 books, received by the Patent fund of the Branch of SPSL SB RAS in 1997. Many of the books are rare.

On January, 13, 1998, Sector of Information Systems, headed by A.B.Yudin, was opened officially. Young personnel of the sector was awarded with hot words and a toaster, helping to survive during cold winter.

On January, 15, 1998, the exhibition of books and journals, L.D.Landau, dedicated to the 90th Anniversary of Birth, was opened in the Inquiry room of the Branch of SPSL SB RAS.

Since February, 2, 1998, the Branch of SPSL SB RAS got an opportunity to work with data bases of the Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences (ISISS) at CD-ROM. Poly-thematic bases in all the fields of humanitarian and social sciences for 1993-1996 were obtained, as well as DB "State and Law" for 1986-1996 and "Economics and Demography" for 1991-1996. The use of all data bases requires payments.
On February, 9, in the Patent reading room of the Branch of SPSL SB RAS (Lavrentyev ave., 6) the exhibition of books and articles Cooperation with Foreign Partners in the Field of Industrial Property Protection was held.

Since February 10, 1998, Scientific books, received by the Branch in 1997were exhibited. More than 70 new books in mathematics, mechanics, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, psychology, technique and economics were presented in the exposition. A big lot was received from "Springer" Publishing House.. The exhibition functioned till March, 15.

On February, 17, in the reading room of the Branch the exhibition Cultural Memorials of People of Siberia: Folklore, Arts, National Traditions, was opened, showing 110 books, booklets and journals from the funds of SPSL SB RAS. Here you had an opportunity to look through materials, dedicated to handicrafts, along with collections of myths, legends, tales, parables and songs of siberians. For serious readers, the works of ethnographers, monographs, dictionaries were prepared.

Since February, 25, 1998, on the Web-site of the Branch the realization of the project of full-text Materials on History of Akademgorodokbegan. Publications on the birth of Novosibirsk Scientific Center, about its people and the ideas, which possessed their minds more than 30 years ago, found their second, electronic life.

Since March, 5, 1998 in the Patent reading room (Lavrentyev ave., 6) the exhibition "Strategy and Tactics of the Licence Operations" was exposed.

On March, 5, the topical exhibition"Russian Women in Science"was opened. About 80 books and articles from the funds of SPSL SB RAS were demonstrated.

On April, 6, 1998 in the Patent reading room (Lavrentyev ave., 6) the exhibition"Problems of Technological Exchange" was opened, demonstrating 34 items of Russian books and articles on the questions of intellectual property and technological exchange.

On April, 9-10, the Web-site of the Branch of SPSL SB RAS left the address http://prometeus.ict.nsc.ru/home/. Since that, our Homepage has the address http://www.prometeus.nsc.ru . The number of visits to our previous "Home" exceeded 11800 since October, 1997.

From March, 17, till April, 30, the Sector of Patent Documents of the Branch of SPSL SB RAS organized Month of Specialist for the workers in the field of patents.

On April, 19, The Day of Science, the exhibition "Russian Science - the Ways of Development" was prepared. Here one could find monographs and articles, published during the last 2 years.

On April, 30, in the Branch Scientific and Practical Conference "New Information Library Technologies", was held, which Program included 14 reports.

The short reports of the participants gave a full picture of library activity in the automation of information processes. This was the theme of the concluding remarks of the deputy director of SPSL SB RAS E.B.Soboleva.

On May, 15, the exhibition "Family and its Functions in New Economic Conditions" dedicated to the International Family Day was opened. On the stands, various literature in the fields of family law, family problems in contemporary conditions was presented. The exhibition included 42 printed units (about 70 articles).

Since May, 15, readers could use the "Catalogue of Foreign Periodicals". It includes information about the presence of journals in the Branch funds since 1995, as well as the web addresses of the editions. The weekly update of the catalogue was provided.

On May, 18-25, the control week of the estimation of quality of Interlibrary Loan system functioning took place.9 libraries of NSC took part in the testing.The results of the check-up were summed in the information, prepared by the Chief of the Sector of Interlibrary Loan L.N.Belonosova.
