    Preface

On April, 8th, 2002, was a 75-year anniversary since the date of birth of the full member of the Russian Academy of Science, the adviser of the Russian Academy of Science Vladimir Vyacheslavovich Boldyrev .

Having graduated from Tomsk State University in 1948, V.V.Boldyrev upon defending of his dissertation of the candidate of sciences worked at the faculty of inorganic chemistry of TSU from 1951 till 1958, then headed the faculty of radiation chemistry of Tomsk polytechnical institute. In 1962, he has defended his dissertation for the doctor's degree. In 1963, with the recommendation of academician N.N.Semenov, V.V.Boldyrev has started his work in the Institute of Chemical Kinetics and Combustion of the Siberian branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, where he has organized the laboratory of kinetics of chemical reactions in the solid phase. In 1975, according to the decision of Presidium SB AS USSR, V.V.Boldyrev has been moved to the Institute of Physical and Chemical Fundamentals of Processing of Mineral Raw Material of the Siberian branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, which was later given the name of the Institute of Chemistry of Solids and Processing of Mineral Raw Material SB AS USSR, and in 1997, the Institute of Chemistry of Solid State and Mechanochemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Science. Since 1976 to 1998 V.V.Boldyrev is the director of this Institute.

V.V.Boldyrev is one of the founders of the Siberian school of specialists in chemistry of solid state, which authority is high both in our country, and abroad. In 40s years of the past century, he has begun investigations in the field of chemistry of solids, having chosen the relation between real structure of solid matter and their reactivity as the basic scientific direction. Researches of interrelation between the mechanism of reaction and the part played by defects have been carried out in crystals by V.V.Boldyrev, the approach that allows tackling a problem of control over the speed of chemical reactions in solid phase on the basis of results of investigations by means of creating in the crystal of those specific defects, the concentration change of which has the drastic effect on the limiting stage of reaction, is formulated. Alongside with these investigations, the reverse problem has been also solved: starting from features of various defects influence on the speed of the reaction, to obtain the information on the mechanism of process of thermal decomposition. As a consequence, the schemes of mechanism of thermal decomposition of oxalates, permanganates of alkali metals, ammonium perchlorate, being used by many experts in the field of chemistry of solid body until now, have been suggested.

Among the major results of the activity in this field was the problem of localization and autolocalization of chemical reactions in the solid phase formulated by V.V.Boldyrev for the first time, this being the fundamental one in modern theories of mechanism and kinetics of chemical reactions in the solid phase, limited by a kinetic stage. An experience of the subsequent development of chemistry of solids has confirmed the great significance of this prediction, having defined therewith the development of the recent trends in topochemistry.

In the field of radiation chemistry, V.V.Boldyrev has put into practice the idea of regulation of radiation stability by the incorporation of dopants, and he also performed the cycle of works into effect of a prior irradiation on the speed of thermal decomposition of solid matter, which had the outcome as the formulation of the commonly accepted now mechanism of thermolysis of the irradiated substances, which is related to the catalytic effect of radiolysis products. Development of these works using accelerators of Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Science has resulted in discovery of a radiation-thermal effect which essence lies in that at greater irradiation dosage rates, some part of defects created by radiation is not tempered, and they can take part in the solid-phase chemical processes initiated thermally.

V.V.Boldyrev's works contain the development of research in the field of mechanochemistry of mineral substances as the method of obtaining the metastable states of solid matter that has resulted in creation of the mechanochemical procedures to accelerate the processes of disintegration of mineral raw material, and to produce the new materials. The important data concerning the unit steps of the processes that occur during mechanical action in the starting point of a propagating crack have been obtained for understanding the mechanism of the mechanochemical phenomena; specific disalignments have been found in crystals, such as, for example, abnormal redistribution of cations between octa- and tetra-positions in the lattice of complex oxides, formation of icosahedral structures in metal systems, and formation of metastable polymorphic modifications in molecular crystals. The kinetic model of the processes, which take place in the mechanochemical reactors, is suggested, and a potentiality to implement the hydrothermal processes in the activator is predicted, which was then verified experimentally. Potentiality is demonstrated to control the reactivity of solid substances by modification of their mechanical characteristics through a feedback between the reaction and mechanical pressure created by it.

In 1993, for a cycle of works in the field of mechanochemistry of oxidic and metal systems, V.V.Boldyrev as a member of scientific group was awarded with the State premium of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology.

Since 1979 V.V.Boldyrev is corresponding member of the Academy of Science of the USSR; in 1991, he is elected the full member of the Russian Academy of Science.

V.V.Boldyrev has more than 700 scientific works, among which are 9 monographs, about 70 inventions and patents. Among his alumnae are more than 40 candidates, and 11 doctors of sciences. During many years V.V.Boldyrev is the Chairman of dissertational board on defending the theses for a doctor's degree in the Institute of Chemistry of Solid State and Mechanochemistry of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Science. V.V.Boldyrev heads the department of chemistry of solids at Novosibirsk state university created by his initiative in 1983. In 1994-96, according to the results of competition among the Russian professors, he was honoured the rank of “Soros Professor” and in 1997, “Deserved Soros Professor”.

Presently V.V.Boldyrev is the director of the scientific and education Centre “Molecular design and ecologically safe technologies” at Novosibirsk state university that is one of 16 centres which have been created in our country with support of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation and the American fund of Civil Research and Development (CRDF) within the limits of the program “Basic researches and higher education”.

V.V.Boldyrev conducts great scientific and organization work. For a number of years he was a member of editorial council of scientific magazines and publications: Kinetics and catalysis, News of SB AS USSR, chemical series, the Magazine of scientific and applied photo and cinematography, Journal of inorganic chemistry, Journal of physical chemistry, Inorganic materials, Success of chemistry, Chemistry for sustainable development, Annales de Chemie (Masons, Paris), Reactivity of Solids (Elsevier, Amsterdam), Journal of Materials Synthesis and Processing (Plenum Press, New York), Reaction Kinetics and Catalysis Letters (Elsevier, Amsterdam; Acad. Kiado, Budapest), Reviews of Solid State Science (World Scientific, Singapore), Molecular Solid State Series (John Wiley and Sons, Ltd, Chichester), Materials Science Foundation (Encyclopedia for the New Millennium) (Trans. Tech. Publ., Inc, Zurich).

In 1992-96, V.V.Boldyrev was the president of the International advisory committee on reactivity of solid matter. From 1988 till 1997, V.V.Boldyrev is the president of the International mechanochemical association at IUPAC.

V.V.Boldyrev is the full member of the Russian Academy of natural sciences, a member of the European Association Board on applied physical chemistry, a foreign member of the Japanese society of a powder technique, a member of the American chemical society. Since 2000, V.V.Boldyrev is a member of the National committee of the Russian chemists. He has government awards: the Labour Red Banner Order, the “Sign of Honour” Order, and medals.
